New publication: "The Nicobar Islands: Cultural Choices in the Aftermath of the Tsunami"

"The Nicobar Islands" by Simron Jit Singh, published by Oliver Lehmann, is a first extensive collection of photographs showing the life and rituals of the Nicobarese prior to the Tsunami. It also gives insights into the living conditions the Nicobarese have to face after the destruction of the Tsunami. The Austrian President Heinz Fischer handed over the newly published book to a group of Nicobarese leaders during their stay in Austria in September 2005.

The book is bilingual (English/German) and can be ordered from Czernin Verlag, to whom we express our gratitude for donating the profit of the book sales to the SIF Fund.

projects

Projects supported by the SIF Fund are planned and realised by indigenous organisations themselves in coordination with SIF. Upon request, SIF organises expert guidance for their local partners. Projects or activities aims at

  • economic revival
  • capacity building
  • sustainable infrastructures
  • continuation of cultural heritage
  • conservation of ecological diversity

In September 2005 a workshop was organised on the theme of "Sustainable Indigenous Futures" in Vienna where a delegation of 6 Nicobarese represented their islands. The exchange was organised by SIF and, besides the Nicobarese, was also attended by participants from Austria, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany. The workshop included theoretical discussions on ecological and cultural sustainability as well as excursions to sites of interest: e.g. a visit to an eco-friendly house in Paudorf (Lower Austria), and to the village of Zöbing (Lower Austria) that was devastated by the floods in the year 2002. The delegation also visited the Museum of Ethnology Vienna, where a remarkable collection of artefacts from the Nicobar Islands are stored.

More information on projects… is forthcoming!
